Snow Skiing Checklist

7 Things You Should Carry On the Ski Slopes

ski8 If you are planning a skiing vacation or maybe you are already at the resort and are preparing for a day of skiing then there is a lot to think about. This is especially so if you are new to winter sports. You need to get your skis, boots and poles. You need to organize your lift pass and then you need to hook up with your ski class. Without these things your day would be unsuccessful, however there are a few other things that people often overlook that can also impact on your day. Here is a checklist of 7 things you may need on the ski slopes.

First thing to take is a trail map. No doubt you have looked at the trail maps that are dotted throughout the resort or even at your pocket version but it is essential that you take it with you when you are skiing. Despite your studies you will need to refer to it at least a few times on the first day. Maybe less as the week goes by but it is always handy to have especially if you take a turn that you are not used to.

Lip balm and sunscreen. The lips are very sensitive to the sun and wind. They are one of the few parts of your body that will be exposed to the elements. Make sure they are protected as chapped lips can spoil your vacation. Take a small tube of sunscreen and top up every few hours or so. This is mainly around the face and ears but this depends on the weather and what you are wearing. If it a pleasant day you may decide to ski in a shirt and will need to protect the shoulders and arms.

Something to clean your goggles or sunglasses. Sunglasses often come with a bag that doubles as a cleaner so this is fairly easy to cater for unless you have lost the bag a long time ago like me. If you don’t have the bag then any cloth, like a chamois, will do the trick. Obviously you need to be able to see where you are skiing so clear vision is essential. I’d suggest goggles or glasses are essential too as the glare from the snow is too much even on an overcast day. Goggles are best but sunglasses are more comfortable in my opinion (depending on the type of skiing you are doing).

Carry some water and a snack. There are many cafes and rest stops dotted around the slopes and you won’t have to look far to get a drink at the bottom of the slope but a bottle of water is handy if you need a break during a run. It also means you don’t have to stop skiing for too long. As for a snack, I like a chocolate bar and skiing is my excuse to indulge my chocoholic tendencies. Other people may take an energy bar or even a sandwich.

A cell phone is a good device to have on you if you have an accident or need to keep in touch with friends. You need to find out where to meet up for lunch at the very least ! Take your wallet with some form of id and a credit card or small amount of money. You don’t want a heavy wallet weighing you down.

Golf Ball Basics

by admin in Golf

gof ball tee Choosing the Right Golf Ball

Golf Balls come in a range of compressions, multiple layer constructions and various dimple patterns. What does it mean and how do you choose the right ball for your game?

Golf Ball Specifications

What most people do not know is that there is no maximum size of a golf ball, and no minimum weight. But if you have ever tried to hit an inflatable beach ball with a golf club you will know it does not travel very far! It could be possible to construct golf balls that could be made to fly much further than a ’standard’ golf ball, by changing their weight, size or characteristics.

All legal golf balls are now manufactured to USGA imposed specifications to make it fair for all golfers:

  • The weight of the ball must not be greater than 1.620 ounces (45.93g).
  • The diameter of the ball must not be less than 1.680 inches (42.67mm).
  • The ball must be spherically symmetric. Sounds obvious, but the ball must be round!
  • The initial velocity of the ball must not exceed a specified limit, when measured on approved testing apparatus.
  • The overall distance (combined carry and roll) of the ball must not exceed a specified distance when tested in specific circumstances on approved apparatus.

Given these manufacturing restrictions imposed on the ball, what can be done to make golf balls different and produce different results for your game?

1. Compression

The compression or ‘hardness’ of a golf ball relates to how easy it is to compress the ball on impact and get the ball to accelerate off the club. A low compression number e.g. 80 is softer; a high compression number e.g. 110 is harder. If the ball is too soft for you will not get as much launch speed out of it as you could get out of a harder ball. A ball that is too hard will not compress enough and will again not launch at optimum speed.

2. Multi-Layer Construction

Prior to 1966, all most golf balls had a wound core made of elastic. These balls were relatively soft and were easy to control with the spin that could be imparted easily on them. In 1996 the first solid one-piece golf ball was produced. These balls were found to fly much further, but they had much less ‘feel’ to them, and were harder to control on shorter shots.

What was needed then was a combination of the two in some way to give the distance of the solid one piece ball and the feel of the soft wound ball. This is where multi-layer balls came in.

A multi-layer ball has a softer outer layer to give better feel on short shots, and a solid core to generate ball speed and distance. Today we have 2 piece, 3-piece and most recently 4-piece balls. Generally, the more layers the higher the price!

3. Dimples

The dimples on a ball are there to create drag as the ball travels through the air. The drag creates aerodynamic lift as the ball spins and keeps the ball in the air far longer than a totally smooth ball would go. Manufacturers vary the pattern and number of dimples on the ball to optimize the distance and trajectory of the ball.

Choosing the right ball for you

You can fit a ball to a player just as you can fit a club. Firstly, find the ball with the optimum level of compression for your swing speed. Then choose a type of ball that feels best for you. This could be a 2, 3 or 4 piece ball. Thirdly, make sure it fits in with your budget - golf balls don’t last forever!

Advantages and Disadvantages of Hunting With A Dog

by admin in Animal Sports, Hunting

Hunting along with a dog is a rather controversial sport these days and there are some dogs better at it than other, some dogs are better "at" a specific type of hunting than others, that is why hunting with a dog is a popular sport among hunting enthusiasts. There aren’t any specific groups registered in the American Kennel Club ( AKC ) for hunting alone other than the hounds which are known to have an ancestral background in their lineage in the hunting domain.

These traits vary from dog to dog: some have a very developed scenting ability while others have very good stamina and so on. Some of the most famous hounds would be the: Beagle, Norwegian Elkhound, American Foxhound, Black And Tan Coonhound and others as well. The widely known AKC Sporting Group is a rather large group of hunting dogs for those hunters that enjoy hunting along with a dog in a woody or watery environment. Some of the dogs that belong to this group would be the: American Water Spaniel, Golden Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel, German Shorthaired Pointer and others as well.

Moving on to the interesting part, the exciting aspect about the above mentioned dogs (and the rest of them, of course) is that each breed has its own natural behavior. Hunting along with one of these dogs will surely improve your hunting efficiency but choosing the most appropriate type of dog is crucial as some dogs excel at fox hunting for example while other are best to be used for squirrel hunting. The terriers were originally developed for hunting small games and killing vermin and if you plan on hunting squirrels for example, a working terrier is the best way to do it. The hunting dogs are most recommended for any type of hunting as they will prove their efficiency if properly trained.

The main disadvantage regarding hunting dogs is that the training procedure is rather complex and might not show up the expected results when hunting for the first time with the dog. Regarding the aspect of training a hunting dog, it is also a matter of time because training a dog properly for hunting purposes can take up to one year and in some cases you will have only one chance to do it because some mistakes are irreversible. An example of an irreversible mistake would be the lack of early socialization. We recommend that you do a little bit of research before choosing your hunting dog (keeping in mind the type of game you are going to use the dog at), start the training from an early age and things should go smoothly.

All things considered, hunting along with a dog has its advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage of using a dog is that if the dog was properly trained from an early age, the chances of catching more animals is higher as this dogs will do some of the work for you. The main disadvantage would be that the entire training process takes some time and every dog is different in its own way so there is no such thing as a standard training procedure applicable for all breeds.

Horseback Riding - Overcome Your Fear

by admin in Equestrian

Top 10 Mental Strategies To Banish Fear
and Build Riding Confidence

Equestrian-Activities

One thing I have learnt during my struggles to become a better horseback rider is definitely non-negotiable: Whatever it is that you want to achieve with your horse and your riding, there is one fundamental concept you have to accept in all its complexity: you have to exercise you mind with as much diligence as you exercise your body.

There is a vast variety of mental exercises at the thinking rider’s disposal: mental rehearsal, anchoring, resourceful state induction, eradicating limiting beliefs with affirmations, reframing, perceptual positioning and many more…at least one to suit every rider, though most riders prefer to use their own combination of techniques. The following ten are some of the greatest confidence boosters for horseback riders.

1. Start By Accepting Yourself Exactly As You Are
You are good enough exactly as you are now. That does not mean that there is no room for improvement, just that you are perfectly acceptable in whatever state or condition you are right now. And while you are at it, give your horse a break and accept him too - just as he is now.

2. Mental Rehearsal
Athletes every where use this technique to prepare themselves form competitions. Imagining and fine tuning every step of their performance results in a dramatically enhanced outcome.

3. Installing Anchors
An anchor is a stimulus that generates a specific state of mind. For example, touching a thumb to an index finger while holding the reins could be an anchor that will make you feel more confident in the saddle.

4. Journaling
Keeping a journal or training can be a powerful confidence booster. When you feel as if your training is going nowhere, you can look back at past achievements to remind yourself that one often feel discouraged just before one’s greatest breakthroughs.

5. Hypnosis
The power of suggestion to the sub-conscious mind can not be neglected. I believe it is an essential supplement to the thinking rider’s mental toolkit.

6. Practice Gratitude
Be grateful for everything you have achieved so far, no matter how small and insignificant a goal it was. Get a gratitude attitude

7. Goal Setting
Your self-esteem, awareness, ability to communicate with horses and people, energy and happiness can all be amplified by your use of goal setting. This type of confidence-building takes time, although the sense of achievement when you reach that elusive star, is an instantaneous confidence booster. So aim for the moon, if you miss it you will still land amongst the stars.

8. Reframing
In reframing you choose what an event will mean to you and how you are going to respond to it emotionally. After a dressage test you can focus intentionally on what went well, instead of every little thing that went wrong. Usually we tend to maximise our blunders, even if they are by far in the minority. Often we are blind and deaf to our own successes.

9. Get Rid of Limiting Beliefs
Most of us have very rigid ideas of who we are, what we can or can’t do, what we do or don’t believe about horses and riding, about instructors and farriers and vets. Very few of us are willing to adjust our beliefs even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Instead of changing our beliefs, we get even more entrenched in our comfort zone, and decide instead to find some one or something else to blame: our horse, for example. Or the weather, another rider, the course planner, the trainer, our instructor etc. etc.

10. Discover Your Learning Style and Stage
Your mental fitness determines how efficiently you learn; how easily you remember new information and master new skills. How effectively you can use your brain to achieve the goals you aim for is subject to your level of mental fitness.

Start your mental fitness program today. You get mentally fit in exactly the same way as you get fit physically. By exercising your mental muscles. Daily, preferably. Otherwise as often as you can find time. The fitter you are mentally, the more spectacular the increase in your confidence.

Archery Fishing

by admin in Archery, Fishing

A Modern Day Hobby From An Ancient Way of Living

bowfishing

Archery fishing was already a practice several thousand years earlier and was usually done by the ancient Egyptians by using long arrows and shooting it to the fishes. They do archery fishing as a means of acquiring food. Today, archery fishing is widely done as a sport by hunting enthusiasts, targeting not only fishes but even other aquatic creatures like alligators. And unlike any other hunting sport, archery fishing is not regulated by the government so anyone can go and score fish anytime.

Before you go on engaging with archery fishing, be sure to bring the following equipments and choose them carefully so that your experience in the water would be more worthwhile and enjoyable.

Choose the right bows. You can never get on any archery fishing hunt without this so better choose the best type of bow, one which is easy for you to carry and manage. Don’t get carried away by the weight of a bow because accuracy does not depend on the bow alone, it has something to do with the force that you exert with it. Also, you should be able to feel if the grip of the bow is comfortable so that you won’t end up hurting your palms just so you could aim at the target accurately.

Arrows are nevertheless important because they are the main tool for shooting. Arrows used for archery fishing is different than arrows used for other methods of archery. These kinds of fishing arrows are usually heavier and more durable than ordinary arrows.

Line and Reel is also a basic necessity for fishing because this line-reel system helps you retrieve the fish or the target you have hit. Without these two equipments, you would end up diving in the waters just to claim your prize. The line is the term used for the thread attached to the edge of an arrow so that the retrieval process would be less difficult. It should be strong enough so as to hold both the arrow and its contents and prevent the fish or the target from being lost in the grip. Reels are the one used to facilitate the motion of the line and should be equally strong and durable.

Archery fishing is an experience which every hunter should experience. For novices in this field, it is recommended to hire a guide or a service so that the hunting experience would be more enthralling and educational at the same time.

GOPPL - The First Fantasy Football League

by Gary Shickadance in Fantasy

neifi_1 My Uncle Scotty is a personal idol of mine. Scotty Stirling has enjoyed a storied career in professional sports ever since Al Davis made him a scout for the Oakland Raiders in the early days of the NFL. He went on to become their general manager and eventually won 2 super bowls. Not bad for someone who was just a beat writer for the Oakland Tribune not too long before.

Then he did something that in today’s times would be unheard of. His relationship with Al Davis tired, so Scotty made the switch to the NBA becoming the GM of The Golden State Warriors in 1981. To be able to evaluate talent at that level in 2 different sports seems pretty much impossible to pull off. But over 25 years later, he’s still doing it. He left the Warriors for the New York Knicks, then settled down as the GM of the Sacramento Kings in the 90’s. He is still with the organization as the Director of Scouting and is considered a legend.

So for those reasons right there, I worship him. So one day I get this email from my cousin. It’s an article about the GOPPL, The Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Procrastinators League. This was the first fantasy football league ever established, and my Uncle Scotty was one of its founding fathers. I couldn’t believe it. He helped invent the game I am obsessed with as well as millions of others! Yes, it was true. If I invented Fantasy Football, I would tattoo it on my forehead and change my name to “I Invented Fantasy Football.” But my Uncle Scotty never even mentioned it to me all these years until I brought it up to him. What a stud.

How to Be a Sports Fan

by Gary Shickadance in Fantasy

I’ve been a sports fan my whole life, following my home town teams with great passion since I was old enough to cheer. And as a fan, I’ve also been snake bitten as none of my teams have ever won a championship. The San Diego Chargers made the Super Bowl once, and got destroyed. My Padres have reached the World Series twice and lost both times, once against the 84 Detroit Tigers and then the 98’ New York Yankees. Bad timing because both of those teams are considered to the be the greatest baseball teams of the modern era. Oh, I was also 38 seconds away from my ASU Sun Devils winning the National Championship, but that was erased by Ohio State’s winning drive at the 96 Rose Bowl.

As a fan, you have no control over the outcome really. And unless you’re a Yankees fan, there is a good chance your favorite team will have an up and down cycle of success. So if you are less fortunate in that department like myself, I have some advice. Don’t ever pick a team outside your city to root for because no one will really respect you for it. And second, get into fantasy sports. You now have some sort of influence on the teams you root for because you pick the players. Drafting your own team and playing against your friends may actually be the most enjoyable way to watch a sporting event. I’ve also personally witnessed friends who didn’t ever closely follow sports become fantasy football addicts after one season playing the game. They go from not being able to name 3 players in the league to knowing the third wide receiver on the Browns depth chart within weeks.cheerleaders

Keep rooting for the teams you grew up watching, but give yourself more options by turning to fantasy.

The NBA (brief) Season Preview

by Fletch Merriweather in Basketball

NBAAll the power polls/rankings should be in, every team should have their rosters just about solidified and the NBA basketball season should be underway shortly. I shall give you my own personal thoughts and predictions on the upcoming season. The NBA champions will come out of the West. Put it on your bulletin board, write it down, take a picture, I don’t care; remember it. Who are the teams that matter this year? In order: San Antonio Spurs, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Detroit Pistons. That’s half out of the West and half out of the East, why?

The best teams come down to three things: talent, experience, and coaching. Barring any unforeseen injuries or scandals *cough*refs throwing games*cough* the West just has the better teams. The Spurs are the champs, have battle-tested players, and arguably the best coach in the league. They have won, and know how to win. They are the team to beat.

The Suns were on their way to giving the Champion Spurs seven games of hell last year when the NBA effectively gave the Spurs the series on a ridiculous interpretation of the rules. The Suns were up in the series when Robert Horry, of the Spurs, committed a flagrant foul that resulted in the suspension of two Suns starters. Read that last sentence again. Yeah the Suns were screwed but they will be back this season and ready to take it all the way again. Their only problem that I can see is they lost some lockdown defense when they traded away Kurt Thomas in the off-season. Their defense is suspect but their offense is sublime. This Suns team has one of the most efficient offenses in the history of the game.

Next is the Dallas Mavericks, who won the most regular season games last season and seemed to be on cruise control to the championship when they met the Golden State Warriors in the first round. Dallas was dropped like a bad habit by a team who may have been the worst matchup for them. This alone exposed a glaring problem that the Mavericks have to face this season, and is also the reason they are at number three. Yet, they have one of the best big men in the league, a deep roster, a commitment to defense and a great coach.

The East teams are the fourth, fifth, and sixth best teams this season and have a lot of work ahead of them if they want to go to the finals.

The Cavaliers are coming off a season where they went to the NBA finals, yet didn’t look like they should have been there. They were swept by the Spurs and sent home with a lot of work to do. They have had some contract issues this off-season and may struggle if they can’t get their team focused.

Next up is everyone’s darling pick: the newly formed Boston Celtics. With a trio of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce you automatically get handed a title, right? Well that’s what the media will have you believe. Chemistry is a unique monster that cannot be forced. The Iverson and Carmelo experiment didn’t exactly yield results last season so be weary of the Celtics. Of course they DO have Garnett, Allen and Pierce.

Finally, the Detroit Pistons. They’re losing Chris Webber to retirement, they’re still stuck with Flip Saunders as a coach and they seem to have lost their identity. Still, they have great players and experience and since the East is fairly weak, they should have no troubles making it into the playoffs.
